Finally proven– You make your own luck.

I saw an article today that finally proves through research that you really do make your own luck. This bodes well for those of us that generally consider ourselves optimists (because now we can prove we’re right), but even better if you are a wanna-be optimist. Now you can justify to yourself that you can actually do something about your lack of luck.

The research was conducted over a 10 year period where the researcher interviewed a group of volunteers from ages 18-84, asked them to complete diaries, personality questionnaires and IQ tests, and invited them to his laboratory for experiments.

From the article

The lesson: Unlucky people miss chance opportunities because they’re too busy looking for something else. Lucky people see what is there rather than just what they’re looking for.

The article goes on to mention that you can actually learn to be lucky.

The results were dramatic: 80 percent were happier and more satisfied with their lives — and luckier. One unlucky subject said that after adjusting her attitude — expecting good fortune, not dwelling on the negative — her bad luck had vanished.

So how do you learn to be lucky? Here are a couple of key points:

  • be more open to opportunities
  • break your routines frequently
  • deal with bad luck by imagining things being worse.
That’s all for today. Good luck with your luck!
