Pronunciation of su, tsu, and desu

Is there a way to help me differentiate between su and tsu? They sound exactly alike to me. I even close my eyes in hopes of increasing my hearing senses but it doesn’t help. Also sometimes when I hear the word desu, it sounds like the su is dropped so it sounds like, “des.”  But other times I can hear the su like when you say, “desu ne.” Maybe it’s my ears and I’m just having trouble picking up on those ever so subtle sounds. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks so much!
Jessica

Answer:

The difference between ‘tsu’ and ‘su’ is a subtle one and can be difficult to distinguish at first, but your ears will get used to it!

Usually ‘desu’ is pronounced ‘des’. The ‘u’ part is extremely soft and almost disappears completely. As far as I have been led to believe the ‘u’ is heard when the speaker is being ultra-formal or polite.
