“What is this?” in Japanese is これはなんですか？ (kore wa nan desu ka?)
If you want to ask “What is that?” it would be それはなんですか？ (sore wa nan desu ka?)
To ask “What is that way over there?” you could say あれはなんですか？ (are wa nan desu ka?)
